Equipment


Good tools make any job easier and being a chef is no exception.    The exact equipment required will vary depending on the exact job you're doing (and may be provided by the college/establishment) but there are some basic tools every chef needs -- and every chef should be practiced and efficient with them.   These are the most basic elements of your job.

Full set of  knives.
Smock or apron.
Hair net or hat.
Pots and pans.
Knife sharpener.
Spot towels.

Don't forget to invest in a pair of sturdy but comfortable shoes; you'll be on your feet all day.       A good selection of cookbooks (both old and new) is a great help too; not for stealing recipes (!) but for inspiration, to get a sense of the history of cooking and to keep up with new trends.
